Higher Electron Affinity Nitrogen or Carbon

Hi! I was just wondering which element has a higher electron affinity nitrogen or carbon and why? I think this is one of the exceptions and I am not sure.

Carbon has a greater affinity for an electron than nitrogen because the half filled p subshell is more stable

Carbon; the half-filled shell is stabler than nitrogen's.

If you ever forget, the period trend of electron affinity genrally follows both Ionization energy and electronegativity.

>> Increases as you go to the right and decreases down a group.

Remember electron affinity is related to the energy released when an electron is added to a neutral atom in order to become a negatively charged atom. The exceptions is though, if a valence shell is already filled or half filled it is less favorable because it doesn't want the electron as badly.


In the case of nitrogen and carbon, Carbon has a higher electron affinity bc it is desperate to fill to a half shell whereas Nitrogen is perfectly stable without the extra electron therefore it releases a lower energy.
