Electron Affinity vs Ionization Energy
If the trends for electron affinity and ionization energy are the same (as in both decrease down a group and increase across a period), how do we differentiate when to use each and when do we use ionization energy to describe an atom vs electron affinity?

Use them in the context of the topic.
For example:
Li usually has a +1 oxidation state due to its low ionization energy.
Cl usually has a -1 oxidation state due to its high electron affinity.
For example:
Li usually has a +1 oxidation state due to its low ionization energy.
Cl usually has a -1 oxidation state due to its high electron affinity.

Ionization energy is the energy required to remove an electron from an atom while electron affinity is how easily an atom will accept an electron into its shells.
