Atomic Radius

Would an electron becoming excited increase the atomic radius of an atom, or is the radius only comnsidered when all electrons are in their ground states?

Comparing atomic radii between different atoms should only be considered when they're in their ground state, not excited state.

When particles are in their ground state, atomic radius generally increases top to bottom and decreases from left to right. I believe that atomic radius is always measured when all of an elements electrons are in their ground state.

how does the radius of atoms change as electrons become excited/energy levels shift? is there a linear increase/decrease in radius?

The radius is only measured when the element is in its ground state!

The atomic radius is measured only in the group state of the element. A side note: atomic radius increases as you go from the left of the periodic table and down. Therefore, francium has the largest atomic radius out of all the elements.

What effect does shielding have on the atomic radius?

Atomic shielding prevents outer electrons from being that attracted to the nucleus, thus resulting in a larger atomic radius.

The effect shielding has on the atomic radius is that it prevents outer electrons from being attracted to the nucleus. Thus, since they are loosely held, the resulting atomic radius is large.

The radius isn't measured in the excited state. It's only measured in the ground state.

The electron has to be in ground state for the radius to be measured properly, not excited.

You should measure an atom's radius through the electron's ground state. The excited state of the electron should have no effect on measuring the atom's radius.

You should only compare atomic radii of atoms in their ground state.
