### Effective Nuclear Charge and Ionization Energy

What's the correlation between effective nuclear charge and ionization energy? Is it that the higher the effective nuclear charge is, the higher the ionization energy will be since it will be harder to remove the electron?

Yes, as the effective nuclear charge increases, the ionization energy increases as well. This makes it harder for electrons to be removed.

### Re: Effective Nuclear Charge and Ionization Energy

Effective nuclear charge means the amount of force that the electrons in the valence shell experience. And so, as the effective nuclear charge increases, that means the electrons are being held on to more tightly, which means that it will require more energy to remove the electrons from the valence shell, and thus the ionization energy increases.
