Octet Expansion

Postby Jose Robles 1D » Sun Nov 24, 2019 11:35 pm

At what period do elements begin to have the option to expand their octet?

Starting from period 3, elements have the chance to expand their octets. Because in period three, electron orbitals go up to 3d.

Period 3, because that's when D-orbitals become available to accommodate extra electrons.

Octet expansion only occurs when a period 3 element utilizes a d orbital.

Adding on the what has been said about period 3 and below, it is important to note that this means period 2 elements, such as C, N, O, and F, cannot expand their octet.

Any element from Period 3 and below are able to expand, meaning elements like C, N, O are not part of that rule because they are exceptions to it. Reminder to always be careful when you are working with these elements and their surrounding electrons.
