Electron Affinity vs Negativity

Postby cecilia1F » Wed Oct 20, 2021 11:11 am

Hello,
I understand that the difference between electron affinity and negativity has to do with the amount of energy released when the element acquires an electron and the ability of an element to pull another electron. I was wondering if we can think of the two as having the same trend on the periodic table.
Thanks!

Electron affinity is the amount of energy released when an atom gains an electron. It increases going right and up. Electronegativity is the tendency for an atom to attract shared electrons when forming a chemical bond. It also increases going right and going up. So yes the trend is the same, but make sure you know that the concepts are different!
