electronegativity

Postby jonathan chi 1J » Fri Oct 22, 2021 10:49 am

What is the trend for electronegativity going left to right on the periodic table?

Hi,

Electronegativity increases as you go left to right (across a period) on the periodic table. As you go across a period, there is a greater number of protons and therefore a greater nuclear charge which pulls in electrons closer (also why atomic radius decreases). Because these elements behave like this, their electronegativity is higher.

Hi, so electronegativity can be thought of as how tight an atom can hold its electrons. Thus, electronegativity increases across a period and decreases down a group.

Hi! In the periodic table, the electronegativity increases from left to right across the period and decreases as you move down a group. The higher the electronegativity of an atom, the greater its ability to attract other shared electrons.

Electronegativity increases going to the right on the periodic table as the higher nuclear charge pulls the electrons closer making it require higher energy to remove an electron giving them a greater affinity to actually gain an electron to become an anion.

Hi,
In the same period, going from left to right, the element does not gain extra shells but has more protons in the nucleus. This gives them more attraction to valence electrons, and also any external electrons coming in. Therefore, as it goes from the left to the right on the periodic table, the electronegativity increases.

it increases because the atomic number increases which also means the number of protons increases so there is a greater attraction and also more electrons.
