Solidified gas meaning

Postby Lily Zello 3I » Tue Oct 26, 2021 5:27 pm

Hi! I was reading the textbook and it said that the van Der Waals radius is half the distance between the centers of neighboring atoms in a sample of the solidified gas. What does solidified gas mean? I thought that solid and gas were opposites, so I'm kinda confused.

Usually solidified gas is gas that has been dropped to a temperature so low that it freezes. This usually makes the atoms much closer together.

Dry ice is an example of solidified gas. When carbon dioxide gas reaches an extremely low temperature, it freezes and turns into a solid. The same solidification can apply to other gases.
