Electron affinity trend

Postby annemarielawrence » Fri Dec 03, 2021 7:58 pm

can someone explain what is the electron affinity trend on the periodic table? When we say it increases across a row, is it increasing in magnitude?

Electron affinity is the amount of energy released when an electron is added to an atom to form a negative ion. It does increase in magnitude as we move right across a row, but decreases as we move down a column.

Yes like the previous post said, electron affinity is the degree to which an atom or molecule attracts additional electrons. This affinity for electrons does increase moving right across a row and decreases down a column.

Electron affinity is the change in energy as an electron is added to a neutral molecule (in gas phase). The trend increases across the row and down the period.

Electron affinity essentially increases because we are adding electrons to energy levels leading to the nucleus drawing in those electrons more tightly. This is why it increases across a row seeing as the atomic radius decreases meaning the electrons are also closer to the nucleus.

Electron affinity increases up and to the right of the periodic table meaning that the most element with the most electron affinity would be fluorine.

Electron affinity increases across the period and increases up a group so the trend is increasing to the top right of the periodic table. Groups 16 and 17 have high electron affinities because the groups wants electrons to be a noble gas.

electron affinity increases across a period and up a group!

The electron affinity increases across to the right and up because elements are adding more electrons resulting in a electrons being more closely packed.

Electron affinity is the energy released when electron is added so it increases across.

Electron affinity increases going up and to the right of the Periodic Table, making the most electronegative atom Fluorine
