(converting moles to gram) what does m=nM mean??

Postby 306166573 » Wed Oct 18, 2023 10:04 pm

Hi!
In a question such as "convert 0.16mol of O2 to grams?" how would we go about turning Moles into Grams?

I used the equation m=nM to find out that 0.16 mol of 02 is 5.0g because the molar mass of O2 is 32 g/mol. However im unsure as to what the "m", "n", and "M" truly mean in the equation m=nM?

Im assuming n is number o moles but im unsure of what that means. I know M is molar mass but I dont know what "m" means.

I'm unsure about m=nM, but when I convert moles to grams, I multiply moles by (g/mol) to cancle out unit moles and left with grams. For example 2mol C x 12 g C/1mol C = 24 g C

Hello, so when converting from moles of one compound to grams, I never really used an equation. You can do this by simply multiplying your mole value by the molar mass of the compound. You started with 0.16 mol of O2 and correctly found the molar mass of O2 to be 32 g/mol. So we calculate 0.16 mol x 32 g/mol. Multiplying across, the mol unit cancels and we are left with 5.12 g, not rounded. I am a bit unsure of what the variables in the equation you mentioned stand for, but if I had to take a guess, I'd say m is for mass in grams, n is the mol value, and M is molar mass. This would make it the same calculation as the first one I did where you multiply moles by the molar mass and are left with mass in grams. I hope this helps!
