Molar Masses

Postby juliefilice 4A » Thu Oct 04, 2018 2:57 pm

Will we need to know the molar masses of elements for tests? I know the basics (O,C,H,N), but am wondering if I should try to memorize any others or if we'll be given a periodic table.

No, we are given a periodic table on all tests, I believe.

I remember Dr. Lavelle saying that we will be given a periodic table for the test, and we can use that to calculate the molar mass of the elements and compounds.

Will we be allowed to use graphing calculators? Or will I have to go out and buy a scientific calculator?

Yeah we do not need to memorize the molar masses of each element, however, as we progress in this course it will be helpful to know the molar masses for some of the more basic elements such as H, O, C, etc. This will save time during tests and quizzes.

We will not be allowed to use graphing calculators as Lavelle said people could use them to record formulas and store functions, but we will be able to use scientific calculators.

Is the molar mass of an element just the number that appears on the periodic table? And is that how many grams/mol is in one atom of that element?

yes, I believe that is correct.

Molar masses of elements are listed below the names of the elements on the periodic table and they are often decimals because they describe the average mass of an element with respect to the element's isotopes (varying masses because of the varying numbers of neutrons) and how often those isotopes appear in nature. To find the molar mass of a molecule, you multiply each element in the molecule by the number of atoms of that element in the molecule separately, and then add up the component parts.

You do not need to know the molar mass of each element as every element has their mass listed under the symbol on the periodic table. Every test and quiz we will be given a periodic table.
