Avogadro's Constant Definition

Postby Madelyn Romberg 1H » Sun Oct 07, 2018 6:28 pm

When it comes to di/tri/etc molecules, does Avogadro's constant apply? Or is it atom and not number of particles?

Avogadro's constant still applies. For example, in chlorine gas (Cl2), there are 6.022 * 10^23 molecules of Cl2 per mol. Avogadro's constant can refer to the number of atoms, molecules, or formula units depending on the substance in question.

I have a similar question. Sometimes questions ask for atoms of Cl2. Does this mean the individual atoms (6.02x10^23) or is it referring to the number of Cl2 atoms in a compound like ZnCl2 has 1 atom of Cl2?

A mole of Cl2 refers to 6.02x10^23 molecules of Cl2. That means there would be 1.204x10^24 individual Cl atoms.

@804994652 Answering your question, those questions should be asking "how many molecules of Cl2" because Cl2 is a molecule not a singular atom. But, maybe if they were asking about how many atoms are in Cl2, you would answer 2 in that case.

Avogadro's constant can be used as the number of particles per mole of a substance

A mole of H2 would include 6.02x1023 molecules of H2. But that would mean twice that for number of atoms.

Avogadro's constant will apply to molecules as well as individual elements it is a mol of the molecule or a mol of the atom.
