Naming Simple Coumpounds

Postby TiffanyL1G » Thu Oct 11, 2018 11:08 am

Can someone please explain how naming simple compounds work? I'm a bit confused when to use -ate, -ide, -ous, -ic, and -ite. Do we have to memorize these?

I believe we don't need to know how to name compounds on the first test. However, we will eventually need to know them. I think the best way to learn them is just memorize them, make flashcards on quizlet. My TA said eventually, after doing a lot of practice problems,we'll start memorizing the names of the compounds more and it'll come more naturally.

I don’t believe we need to know this quite yet, but if you want a head start here’s a few that have to do with polyatomic ions:
-ate means it has more oxygen
-ite means it has less oxygen
Per- means it has one more oxygen
Hypo- means it has one fewer oxygen
These are from the video at https://www.khanacademy.org/science/che ... tomic-ions
Where they go through helpful examples detailing each one, and have additional resources if you are still curious.
