Theoretical/Actual Yield
What is the unit for theoretical yield or actual yield? In the example Dr. Lavelle provided in class the unit was in grams, does it always need to be in grams or based on different questions the unit changes?

Re: Theoretical/Actual Yield
Most of the time, actual yield is given in grams and theoretical yield will be calculated in grams. You can use these to determine the percentage yield.
Percentage yield = actual yield/theoretical yield * 100
Percentage yield = actual yield/theoretical yield * 100

Re: Theoretical/Actual Yield
It seems that because most of our problems are given in terms of grams, yields will also be in grams

Re: Theoretical/Actual Yield
Usually in grams since most of the problems give to us will be in grams. But I also depends on if you’re converting/how you will convert.

Re: Theoretical/Actual Yield
When calculating percent yield in a lab, the product obtained from a reaction/experiment will generally be weighed and its mass is recorded. Therefore, knowing that actual yield is in a unit of mass, theoretical yield has to also be in the same unit of mass in order to calculate percent yield.
Re: Theoretical/Actual Yield
Most of the time, it is in grams. Sometimes it might be the kg, but it's very rare.

Re: Theoretical/Actual Yield
Yield will be calculated as a mass, usually just grams, but you could also see kg or mg in some problems. For percent yield, you're dividing a unit by the same unit so it cancels (like grams/grams) which is why percent yield doesn't have a mass unit, it's just a percentage.
