What does dilution mean in a chemistry problem?

Does dilution mean you are adding or subtracting the amount of liters in a solution ?

Dilution means you are decreasing the concentration of the solution by adding more solvent. So, it would generally mean increasing the number of L in the solution.

Dilution is when you are adding more solvent to a solution which contains solute and already some solvent. More often than not, the solvent that is being added is distilled water. A dilution leads to an increase in liters of solution and decreases the molarity of the solution.

Dilution is when you make something less concentrated

All of the above are true. Just be sure to remember that dilution does NOT change the moles of solute in the solution, only the overall volume

I would suggest don't think of dilution as adding or taking out liters in a solution, but rather as decreasing the concentration of a solution while keeping the amount of solute the same.

Yes! Dilution would be adding more solvent (usually an aqueous solution such as water) while keeping the solute amount the same, therefore, changing the molarity of the solution.

Dilution is when you add more solvent, decreasing the concentration of the overall solution since the amount of solute remains the same.

Additionally, since the number of moles in dilutions remains the same, let n = moles
ni = nf
and since Molarity = n / V (where V = volume in Liters)
you can say that
MiVi = MfVf

This is the main equation used in dilution problems, where V is volume of the total solution. From this equation, you can find initial concentration of solute, initial volume of solution, final concentration of diluted solution, or final volume of diluted solution.
