HNO3 is a strong acid, so it is a good compound to memorize the chemical formula for. However, if you did not have it memorized, you could determine the chemical formula by knowing that HNO3 is a protonated compound of NO3-, which has a charge of -1. HNO3 is neutrally charged and H+, a proton, has a charge of +1. Therefore, one mole of H+ would combine with one mole of NO3- to form the neutral compound HNO3.
