Hi, does anyone know if we need to buy our own blue book or scantron for the test this upcoming week? Thanks!

The syllabus and testing schedule doesn’t say anything about needing a blue book or scantron but I would have one just in case. I’m going to shoot an email to my TA just to confirm though.

I believe my TA told our discussion group that they would be providing like a printed exam and you would be writing directly onto that to answer, so probably no blue book/scantron needed.

Hey, I just took the Test this morning at 8 am. You do not need to purchase anything for the exam. Your TA will provide you with printed periodic table and a printed version of the exam. There is not a lot of work space on the exam so be aware. Th exam MUST be completed IN PEN, so remember to bring one. When you finish the exam you will need to turn in your homework from this week. So do not forget that. The text is pretty easy and straight forward. Make sure you can comfortably convert from grams to moles and convert in SI units.

No, for this test all you need to bring is a pen and a SCIENTIFIC calculator. They will provide the test, a periodic table, and list of constants.

There is plenty of room on the test to solve the problems. You are allotted at least half a sheet per problem which I found to be enough even with some mistakes scratched out.

Yup! Bond lengths are typically measured in Angstroms.

That one confused me too! However, I realized that the conversions were on the front of the test on the resource page. 1 Angstrom is 10^-10 m. For that problem, you could use the conversions listed on the front of the test to convert from meters to Angstroms. I hope this helps!

omg i'm going to be so annoyed with myself if they had the angstrom conversion on the front page. I think I did the conversion correctly but I wasn't 100% sure during the test is it was 10x10^-10 m or not but I just went with it. I guess it's a lesson of learning to utilize all provided resources.

I'm not 100% sure because every TA has a different schedule, but I heard they should all be graded by the end of next week! It seems like some TAs are planning to have them done by the next sections, so I feel like that's a good guess.

According to the syllabus, Test 1 and Test 2 are both worth fifty points each. Although there were 7 questions on Test 1, I'm sure partial credit will be given for each question.

All of the materials for the Tests (1 & 2) and Exams (Midterm & Final) are provided. There is also a conversions/formula sheet on the first page. Also remember to have a scientific calculator instead of a graphing since graphing calculators are not allowed.

not entirely sure, but i believe you should still get some points for accurate process

While I'm not sure whether we get our midterms/final back, possibly Lavelle's attempt to preserve future test integrity, I believe once the TAs grade the smaller scale tests (tests 1/2) we get them back.

If I'm not mistaken, we can receive partial credit for problems if it is evident that we understand the concept but our calculations happen to be wrong.

I was also wondering this as, I was also curious as to how far off of an answer would grant us the maximum amount of points ie. our answer is 8.4 whereas the actual answer is 8.7. Would that count as a correct answer if the work was done right but there was some incorrect rounding here and there ?

I believe so, yes. Dr. Lavelle mentioned in lecture to always try to solve as much of the problem as possible which leads me to believe partial credit will be given.

Also, I believe questions heading in the direction are given partial credit, and the grader will read through your work.

The value of the Angstrom was actually given to use on the reference sheet if I recall correctly. All equations and values we need for any calculations should be given on the reference sheet.

Test 1 was worth 50 points and we don't bring anything. The TA provided us with the formula sheet and problems with much room, especially with the empty back sides to show work. We have the whole discussion section (50 minute period) to complete it. I think we will get it back by the next discussion section.

An angstrom is 10^-10m, so there are .1 angstrom in a nanometer and 100 angstroms in a picometer.

I thought TA's were supposed to give our tests back, but the score itself isn't necessarily the grade we got because of the final grade being 50% is an C-. (If that makes any sense)

The tests are not curved. The class is completely point based meaning the percent you received on the test is your grade on the test. I believe the class is out of 500 points and all the assignments, tests, midterm, and final will add up to 500 points. If you received a 50 on your test then you got all 50 points when adding to your final grade. However if you got a 40 then if you were to get 100% on everything else the best you could do in the class is get 490/500 points, meaning you received a 98%. You add up all the points you get from assignments, tests, the midterm, and the final.

It's not going to be on test 2 . Test 2 is going to cover everything that we have learned after the midterm or the things that aren't covered by the midterm. And yes, the content of test 1 is going to be on the midterm.
