Test 1 Grading

Postby Sunia Akaveka 4I » Thu Oct 10, 2019 9:23 pm

Hi all,
Does anyone know how the first test is graded? I know it's out of 50 points, but I'm a bit confused on the whole "you get a point for each minute" since obviously the tests are graded on correctness and work to show answers.

I'm pretty sure it is graded on how many points out of 50 we get on the test. But if not, I think the test is out of 40 points and we get 10 points for being there? I heard from my friend who took chem 14a last year that her test was out of 40 points.

I'm curious to see how lenient the graders are with partial credit

I had no idea we get 10 points for just being there!

the amount of points that each question was worth was put on the test but they do give partial credit if you did the right work but got the wrong answer

Can anyone confirm this distribution of 10 points for attendance? If so, this is BIG NEWS.

Will the grading on test 1 be similar to AP style grading? Certain lines of work that demonstrate what you know can get you partial points?

I wasn't aware of getting 10 points for being there but each question on the test is out of a certain number points and partial credit is given even if you have the incorrect answer, so I would assume that grading is similar to AP in that you don't get completely marked off for a wrong answer.

I didn't realise we'd just get 10 points for taking the test, but my TA definitely said they'd give out partial credit whenever possible. It's definitely a good idea to just write down as much work as possible so they can award you for what you have.

Does anyone know when we are expected to get our test 1 scores back? Is it usually the following week in section?

Showing all your work will help your chances of getting more points because they grade based on your method and calculations. Even if your final answer is wrong, you can still get partial credit for any work that you did correctly.

Is there a specific way that we should be showing our work to maximize partial credit like showing unit conversions and stuff? Also, since Dr. Lavelle didn't explicitly go over Sig Figs how impactful are they going to be on the test grading?

Im not completely sure how the test is graded but I assumed that because it was free response, partial credit would be issued. Thus, it would be similar to how the AP exam is usually graded where is the concept, or the work was done in the right direction, it would get a certain number of points.
