I'm confused by the wording of this question: (a) Determine the number of KNO3 formula units in 0.750 mol KNO3. Could someone explain what a formula unit is and how to find it? When I looked it up online the definition said "empirical formula" which is why I'm confused. Thanks!

A formula unit is in a sense the chemical compound it seems with the least amount of elements so I thought of it as the simplest chemical compound and minimum number of elements in it. So it can also be called the empirical formula.

To solve this problem, you would convert the 0.75 moles of KNO3 to atoms using Avogadro's number. So (0.75 moles of KNO3)(6.02x10^23 atoms/mole) = 4.52 x 10^23 atoms.

I think of formula units just as if they were atoms so I would solve this problem just as if you were solving for atoms. You'll get the same answer except you would be in formula units instead of atoms, so I would just multiply the given mols by Avogadro's number and you'll have the solution in formula units
