e- movement and different lobes

Postby Chem_Mod » Mon Sep 12, 2011 3:10 pm

Question: Can electrons move between different lobes of a p orbital? If they can, what about the nodal plane? Does it have to do with the wave-like properties of electrons?

Answer: You are right about the wave-like properties of electrons. It is still impossible for us to follow an electron's travels within its atom. Recall that the p orbital picture is only a plot of probability, and that this plot comes from a mathematical expression of the electron as a wave.
