Question 1.33 on the homework

On part C of problem 33 the answer key asks us to consider the kinetic energy of the electron but I was wondering why we couldnt find the wavelength directly form the energy calculated earlier.

Because the calculated energy from part (b) is just enough to remove the electron from the metal surface and would not give the electron any kinetic energy. The beginning of the question states that the velocity of an electron that is emitted from a metallic surface by a photon is 3.6x10^3 km/s, which means the electron in this question is required to have some kinetic energy after being removed. Thus, for part (c), you have to include the kinetic energy, which can be calculated from the given velocity.
