History of experiments on the model of atom

Postby Tina Wen 1G » Fri Apr 13, 2018 7:53 pm

Do we need to know the basic mechanisms and process of the historical experiments on the nature of atoms? Like how the scientists determined the nuclear model of the atom including protons, electrons, neutrons, etc?

I have not heard the professor mention anything about this during lecture and I have not seen this listed as something we should know in the outlines on his website. I think knowing how to solve different problems related to what we are learning is what we are expected to focus on but I am not completely certain if he expects us to know any history behind the material being learned.

I do not think this will be tested. :)

I doubt we would ever have this question a test/midterm/final. Especially cause it was never mentioned in lecture.

I'm pretty sure this class is more based on concepts and calculation instead of history so you're probably good.

Nothing on the syllabus indicates that this is material needed for the course

I think with the tests and midterms for this class, we should be focusing on application based questions. So, making sure you know how to solve the specific problems we are being taught is a bigger priority than the history of the experiments on the model of an atom. I also do recall the professor mentioning that our main focus in this class is problem solving and doing it efficiently. Hope this helps!

I don't think so, I am pretty sure we just stick to the material covered in class and the problems given in the homework. The history and experiments behind the material are in the book just if we wanted to know how each thing was figured out.
