Re: Electron Gaining/Losing energy
When the atom is excited it is gaining energy, that is why it is able to jump to higher energy levels.
Hope this helped! :)

Re: Electron Gaining/Losing energy
When atoms absorb energy, the electrons go into an "excited" state which moves them up electron orbitals. In short, when an atom is excited, electrons have absorbed energy.

Re: Electron Gaining/Losing energy
Further, when an atom absorbs energy its electrons jump up to higher energy levels in by quantized amounts, going up in specific levels through the electron orbitals. So yes, electrons of excited atoms gain energy.

Re: Electron Gaining/Losing energy
Just to add to the topic, when an electron goes down to lower energy levels, it releases energy in the form of photons.

Re: Electron Gaining/Losing energy
Additionally, electrons can only absorb or emit certain discrete packets, or quanta, of energy. This means that only when an electron absorbs a certain amount of energy will it jump up to the next energy level. And since electrons can only emit certain amounts of energy, they will only emit the specific corresponding wavelengths of light.
