electron energy

Does an electron lose energy when it moves up an energy level? Or does it just decrease?

I am not sure what you mean by the electrons either lose energy or decrease. However, when electrons move (jump) from a lower energy level to a higher one, they absorb energy (gain), and when electrons move (jump) from a higher energy level to a lower one, they emit energy (lose).

Quite the opposite, when an electron moves up to a higher energy level, it is because it has absorbed energy that matches the energy difference between those two levels. An electron emits (loses) energy as a photon as it falls back down to a lower energy level.

When moving up energy levels, an electron absorbs energy (gains/increases in energy). If an electron falls down an energy level, it emits energy as a photon (loses energy).

As the photon excites the electron it transfers its energy to the electron, thus the electron gaining energy. when the electron falls to its original level it emits a photon of the same energy; it loses energy in this phase as a new photon gains that energy.

Just to add on, when an electron goes up a level, let's say from n=2--->n=5, there is a "relaxation" and light emission. The opposite, when an electron goes from n=5--->n=2 there is an "excitation" and energy absorption. An electron can only exist on one orbit or another, not multiple at a time. The largest jump an electron can make would be the energy to make purple light, and the smallest jump it can make would be the energy to make red light.

When an electron moves up a level, it absorbs energy so it can keep getting the energy to keep going up levels, until it exhausts and drops back down and releases all the energy it pent up.

electrons need energy to move up energy levels, so when an electron moves up energy levels, it absorbs energy. in contrast, when an electron moves down energy levels, releases/emits energy.
