Using masses of protons, neutrons, and electrons

Postby claudia_1h » Tue Oct 15, 2019 2:34 pm

I've noticed that several homework problems require the use of the numerical masses of protons, neutrons, and electrons. Do we need to memorize these values or would they be given on a test?

It seems that we would probably be given these values or they would be found on some sort of reference table. But it also would not be a bad idea to know their general values.

If it's needed for a test then the amount should be on the formula sheet. Otherwise, I don't think we'd be tested with a question that required us to memorize the mass of protons, neutron, and electrons. Also, these values are given on the back of the hardcover textbook along with a lot of other formulas/constants.

I don't think we'll have to memorize them. But, the masses of each are as follows

electron: 9.11*10^-31 kg
proton: 1.675*10^-27 kg
neutron: 1.673*10^-27 kg

I went to one of the UA sessions and they gave us a constants and equations sheet for practice problems. On that sheet was the masses of protons, neutrons, and electrons so I'm assuming that we don't need to know these values.

We probably don't need to memorize the masses. If anything, I think we would need to know the mass of an electron since it seems to be the most commonly used, but I don't think we'll need to memorize it.

I don't think we need to memorize the values. Many values are already provided on the formula sheet. However, try to know their masses relative to each other.

Usually, the masses that are required for a calculation are given in the problem or on the formula sheet.
