Question About Electron State

Postby AChoudhry_1L » Wed Oct 16, 2019 6:44 pm

At the end if today's lecture, Dr. Lavelle described the electron as being in the 2px state. What does he mean by this?

It's basically the orbital. The 2 is the shell (energy and size) determined by the principle quantum number (n), the p is the subshell (shape) determined by the angular momentum quantum number (l), the x is the orbital (orientation) of a subshell determined by the magnetic quantum number (ml).

It means the electron is located in the p orbital of the second energy level, and is located somewhere along the x plane.

An electron in the 2px state just means its in the p orbital. The p orbital has three possible areas two electrons (2px,2py,2pz) so the x is just there to denote that its in the first p orbital.
