Resonance Structures

Postby Madeline Phan 1E » Sat Nov 02, 2019 4:57 pm

Do resonance structures have to optimum formal charge when we are drawing them? Also, how does one draw a resonance hybrid?

I'm pretty sure the formal charge doesn't change because you aren't changing connectivity just arrangement? Also you can use the dotted lines to draw resonance to show the change in bonds.

Whenever you are drawing a lewis structure, no matter if it is resonance or not, it is optimum to try to draw it with the least formal charge possible. But for different variations of a resonance structure, the overall formal charge should remain the same.
