11. a) An excited hydrogen atom undergoes an electronic transition from n=3 to n=1. Calculate the frequency of the photon emitted.
11. b) If a hydrogen electron goes from n=6 to n=4, will ∆E be negative or positive? Will the energy of the photon emitted be negative or positive?

I missed the end of the review session, so I was unable to see how this problem was solved. How do you solve it?

For the first one just use either Rydberg's equation or Bohr's Frequency Condition (if you choose this, calculate En for n = 3 and n = 1 and plug those into delta E = h.v).
For the second, remember that outer layers are more energetic than inner ones, so if an electron moves from an outer shell to an inner one, delta E is going to be negative. Energy can't be negative (we only use negative / positive signs in calculations to represent absorption or emission of energy).
