Electrons as Waves and Particles

Postby Keon Amirazodi 3H » Sun Oct 25, 2020 3:09 pm

In which experiments or tests do electrons display wave-like properties? What about particle-like properties? How can we tell?

There is no debate if electrons are particles (the confusion is when it comes to light since they are different than matter but the photoelectric experiment showed the act like particles in a 1:1 ratio with electron particles)

Double-slit experience shows electrons behave like waves since they have a diffraction pattern.

to my understanding, all electrons display wave-like and particle-like properties. in fact, all objects posess this duality. however, larger objects are not affected by waves because they are so massive.

All electrons behave wave-like and particle-like. Larger objects are not affected by waves because they are so massive, and they are also more predictable than small objects. These principles are derived from the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle.

In the photoelectric experiment, we saw that light has particle-like properties because increasing the intensity of the light did not result in ejected electrons in the frequency of the light was too low.

In the double-slit experiment, we saw that electrons have wave-like properties as they produce diffraction patterns. Through the De Broglie Equation, we determined that all matter has wave-like and particle-like properties; however, the wave-like properties of large objects are not detectable.

Hope this helps!
