What does this symbol mean?

Postby lwon Dis2I » Mon Oct 26, 2020 10:31 pm

What does this symbol mean? I have not found anywhere in the book where it defines it.

From what I remember from the lectures, I believe it means "proportional to."

This symbol means "proportional to", and is useful when you are describing the relationship between two variables. For example, if one variable is "proportional to" 1/another variable, they have an inverse relationship, and if one variable is "proportional to" another variable, they have a direct relationship.

That symbol stands for "proportional to" and is used to describe how one thing is the same as or equal to another thing. Similarly, it can be used to describe something as "inversely proportional" to another thing when that second term has a "^-1" on it.

I'm glad someone asked this because I was wondering too! This is the first time I've seen professors use this notation so thank you for the clarification!

It means "proportional to" ! In some of the example equations in the textbook, the sign shows up often. Hope this helps. :)

Proportional to. Meaning following the same trend.

That symbol is called alpha and it means "proportional to"

This symbol means "proportional to"! Basically, it would mean that the variables would both increase and decrease at the same rate!

The symbol shows proportionality and is used to describe relationships between different related values.

The kind of elongated/open alpha symbol indicates proportionality! For example, E∝v, and the proportionality constant is h (E=hv).

That symbol indicates a "proportional to" statement.

The symbol means "proportional to"
The symbol is known to the the Greek letter alpha. You use the symbol in between two variables/quantities. For example, if x and y had an alpha in between them, that that means x is directly proportional to y.

That symbol is used to relate 2 values that are proportional to each other. For example, in Planck's equation E=hv, the energy of a photon is directly proportional to the photon's frequency

This symbol means "promotional to". It indicates a proportional relationship between variables, meaning they increase and decrease at the same rate.
