CH4 vs CCL4

Postby Alex_Lee_1K » Sat Dec 04, 2021 12:46 am

Hello,

In CH4 vs CCl4, the boiling point for CCl4 is greater. Could someone explain why that is the case?

Thanks

CCl4 has more electrons than CH4, therefore the dispersion forces are stronger, which increases the boiling point.

CCl4 has a greater boiling point, since Cl is bigger and therefore has greater London Dispersion forces. Therefore, it has overall stronger intermolecular forces.

That is because CCL4 has more electrons I believe

CCl4 has more electrons and greater intramolecular forces so it has a higher boiling point

CCl4 has more electrons so it would have a higher boiling point

Less electrons means lower boiling point and CH4 has less.
