Inter vs. Intra

Postby amar_151 » Thu Nov 04, 2021 12:06 am

Hi. Can someone clarify what the difference between intramolecular forces and intermolecular forces is? I tend to mix these up every year I take chemistry. Are all the interactions we learned intermolecular forces?

Intermolecular forces refer to the attractive forces that exist between molecules. An example of this would be dipole-dipole bonds. Intramolecular forces refer to the attractive forces that exist within molecules. An example of this would be a covalent bond.

I find to remember these definitions by recalling that the prefix inter- typically refers to "between two things" (ex: international = between nations) and the prefix intra- typically refers to "within something" (ex: intraregional = within a region)

Hey! I found a great resource on khan academy that further breaks down inter and intra molecular forces that I highly recommend looking over and also do the practice problems afterwards.

https://www.khanacademy.org/science/cla ... lar-forces

For intramolecular forces you have to be able to remember that it means there are forces holding an atom together, for example HCl is being held together within a molecule.

For intermolecular forces it means that there are forces that exists between molecules.

Another thing that can help is distinguishing the latin root words inter and intra. Intra means within and Inter means between. So within atoms, between molecules.

Hope this helps!

Intramolecular forces refer to the forced WITHIN molecules and between the atoms, like covalent and ionic bonds. Intermolecular forces refer to the forces BETWEEN molecules, like hydrogen bonds, dipole-dipole interactions, and LDF. Hope this helps!

Hi,
The two can be easily confused. However, "inter" acts between molecules, and "intra" acts within a molecule.
Hope that helped!

A great way to remember this is the "internet", which is used by everyone, and intermolecular forces occur between all molecules. An "intranet" on the other hand, is a restricted database meant for an inner circle, and thus, intramolecular forces occur WITHIN the given species.

Intermolecular forces occur between two separate molecules. For example, dipole-dipole forces and London Dispersion forces are examples of intermolecular forces. Intramolecular forces occur between atoms that are the same molecule.

Intermolecular forces occur between two separate molecules, so like hydrogen bonds and dipole attractions. Intramolecular forces, however, occur within a molecule, such as bonds.

They can be easy to mix up, but it helps to just remember what each prefix means. 'Inter' means between while 'intra' means within. So intermolecular forces are between molecules while intramolecular forces are within them.

Intramolecular forces are interactions within the molecule, while intermolecular forces are between molecules. One way I remember this is how international is referring to multiple countries, while intranational is interactions within in a singular nation.

Intra = within a molecule (examples: covalent, ionic, metallic bonding)
Inter = between molecules (examples: dipole-dipole interactions, hydrogen bonding, LDFs)
"Inter" might remind you of interstate highways, which connect different states just like how intermolecular forces connect different molecules.
The "a" in "intra" could also remind you that intramolecular forces only involve a single molecule.

The way that I remember the difference between Inter and Intra is looking at highways. Interstate highways are between different states, similar to intermolecular forces that work between molecules.

I think what helps is to know what the meaning of intra and inter mean. Inter means between and intra means within. Thus, intermolecular is going to be between molecules while intramolecular is going to be within a molecule.

Intermolecular forces are forces in between molecules. This would include stuff like hydrogen bonds and van der wall interactions. Intramolecular forces are forces in between atoms of a molecule. So this would be ionic and covalent bonds.

Intermolecular forces are forces that act between molecules.
- LDF, H-bonds, ion-dipole, dipole-dipole

Intramolecular forces are forces that act between the atoms of a molecule.
- covalent bonds, ionic bonds

As everyone said above, intermolecular forces refer to the forces that come into play when different molecules interact, and these include LDFs, dipole-dipole, hydrogen bonding, etc. On the other hand, intramolecular forces refer to the forces acting between atoms within the same molecule, which include ionic and covalent bonding.

Hello,

Intramolecular forces (ionic bonds, covalent bonds) act within molecule whereas intermolecular forces( ion-dipole, hydrogen bonding, dipole-dipole, and London Dispersion to name a few) act between molecules! Intramolecular forces are the forces within the molecule that hold atoms together. Intramolecular forces tend to be stronger than intermolecular forces.

Here's a good diagram displaying intermolecular forces! :

Inter molecular forces are between molecules and molecules. Breaking these forces do not affect chemical properties or characteristics of the substance since it's still the same molecule.
Intra molecular forces are between each atom of the molecule. Breaking these forces are changing the type of molecule and making it different substance.

Prefixes are so important in the physical science world. So 'intra' means within and 'inter' means between. In terms of chemistry, intra would refer to bonds within the molecule, while intra would mean bonds between molecules. I remembered this by thinking of other words that being with inter, such as international(means between nations) and intermission (a break between time intervals).

The way I think of it is that intra means "within" and inter means "between". I remember it by thinking about the word "international"- because international means between nations, not within a nation. Hydrogen bonding for example, is an intermolecular force because it is a force that acts between molecules not within a molecule.

Hi,

I think intramolecular force is the force that takes place inside a molecule usually between&among atoms. For example, a single bond between two Carbon is longer but weaker than a double bond between them. at this time, we are talking about the intramolecular force with in a molecule.

While for the other kind of force, intermolecular force, London Dispersion Force is a good example to appropriately illustrate its difference between intramolecular force. We know that every molecule exhibit a London Dispersion Force with another same molecule. In this scenario, we are talking about intermolecular force.

Hope this could address your concerns.

Intermolecular forces are between two different molecules, so these include forces such as dipole-dipole, ion-ion, dispersion forces, etc. However, intramolecular forces are the bonds that create a singular ionic compound or covalent molecule between atoms.

Intramolecular forces are ones that occur within the same molecule while intermolecular forces occur between two different molecules, the best way I find to remember it is to think of an interstate highway which goes between two states like intermolecular forces work between two molecules.

Intramolecular forces are found within a molecule. Bonds are an example of intramolecular forces (as in whether covalent, ionic, or metallic bonds form). Intermolecular forces, however, are found between molecules. These are weaker forces that effect viscosity, melting point, etc.. Hydrogen bonds are an example of intermolecular forces.

Intra means 'within' and inter means 'between'. Using the prefixes, intramolecular forces would be the forces that are within the molecules, and intermolecular forces would be between the molecules. Intramolecular forces are also generally stronger than intermolecular forces.

Intermolecular forces are interactions between two separate compounds. This includes dipole-dipole interactions, London dispersion forces, and hydrogen bonding. Intramolecular forces are interactions within a molecule. This includes covalent bonding and ionic bonding.

Inter refers to the forces between molecules while intra refers to the forces between atoms. You can think of inter- being related to the outside of a molecule while intra- refers to the internal components of a molecule.

Intra- Refers to forces between atoms within a molecule
Inter- Refers to forces between two molecules

I would recommend watching the video below as it is super helpful and goes into much more detail:

Intramolecular forces are the forces that are between atoms holding them together in a molecule
Intermolecular forces are forces that occur between two different, nonconnected molecules

Intra: within a molecule; between atoms
Inter: between molecules

I like to think of this as INTERnational flights refer to travel between countries --> INTERmolecular forces are between molecules.

Intra is within itself, inter is between one or more.

Intramolecular forces are the forces between atoms within one molecule. For example, the bonds between H and O in water. Intermolecular forces are forces between multiple molecules of something, like multiple molecules of water.

Intermolecular forces are forces between molecules while intramolecular forces are forces within a molecule amongst the atoms themselves.

You could remember the differences by thinking about what different examples of them are. For instance, examples of Intramolecular bonding are ionic and covalent bonds. Meanwhile, examples of intermolecular forces are ion-dipole, dipole-dipole, ion-ion, London dispersion forces, etc. Intramolecular forces are forces between one molecule, while intermolecular forces are between molecules!

Intra is going to be referring to forces within an atom while inter is going to be between two different molecules. My HS teacher told us to think of it as an interstate, connection between two different states through a road. Just like a connection of two different molecules through a bond

Intramolecular forces are contained within an individual molecule, while intermolecular forces are between molecules. I always remember this by comparing it to other words: intramural means you're playing within the same school, and international means between nations, for example.

Intermolecular forces are what happens between molecules (LDF, Dipole-Dipole, Hydrogen Bonding, etc.) whereas intra molecular forces are whats happening within a molecule (covalent bonds, ionic bonds, etc.)

Intramolecular forces are the forces between two atoms/elements within the molecule itself. For example in HCl, the intramolecular force would be between the H atom and the Cl atom. Intermolecular forces are forces between multiple molecules. For example, the intermolecular forces would be between one molecule of HCl and another molecule of HCl.
