"Gray area"

Postby JDC 2I » Thu Nov 07, 2024 9:56 pm

Hi, so Dr. Lavelle mentioned that when the electronegativity difference of two bonded atoms is between about 1.5 and 2 there's a gray area where it's not ionic (a salt) or covalent (a molecule). Are there any specifics we have to know about that range of electro negativity difference?

Remember in class I talked about salts are more soluble than molecules in water.

If you were given electronegativity values and the difference was 1.7 and it was stated that the compound is soluble in water.
Then one could draw the inference that it is acting more like a salt with an ionic bond.
