Ion-Ion Interactions vs. Ionic Bond

Postby Samantha Young 2L » Mon Nov 11, 2024 6:44 pm

Hello! I was wondering what the difference between ion-ion interactions and ionic bonds is? In the textbook and in lecture, ion-ion was put in the intermolecular forces table so that is why I am slightly confused.

Ionic bonding is within one compound, hence intramolecular force, like the bonding of Na+ and Cl-. Ion-ion interactions would be the attractive force felt between two oppositely charged ions that aren't bonded together yet, making it an intermolecular force.
