How do you determine the most likely charge for ions of elements? What is the likely/expected charge determined by?

You can determine the most likely charge for ions of elements based on the element's group number and by how many electrons are needed to have a stable configuration. For instance, metals are positively charged since they are losing their electrons while non-metals are negatively charge since they are gaining electrons to achieve a stable configuration. Hope this helps!
