Ion-ion forces in water

Postby Howard Nguyen 1L » Thu Nov 14, 2024 12:18 am

Hi, I was wondering since ionic bonds weaken in water due to water surrounding and disrupting opposite charges attracting each other, would it also disrupt the interionic forces between ionic compounds? If so, would that mean the vapor pressure would increase and the boiling point would decrease due to lowered strength of the ion-ion forces?

Yes, water weakens ion-ion attractions by surrounding ions, but this mainly affects ionic compounds in solution. For pure ionic solids, interionic forces stay strong, keeping vapor pressure low and boiling points high. In solution, boiling point and vapor pressure are more influenced by water's properties and colligative effects than by weakened ion-ion forces.
