oxidation number question

Postby Ryan Thompson 2J » Mon Nov 20, 2023 12:47 am

I recall there was an oxidation number question on the homework, but is there any other reason we’d need to use oxidation numbers for something that could be on the test?

Oxidation numbers can also be used to find the ratio of atoms in molecules for atoms with multiple oxidation numbers based on which oxidation number they have!

If a molecule has two types of atoms, one with a known amount and one with an unknown, and you know the overall charge of the molecule and the oxidation number of one of the atoms, you can find the number of atoms of the unknown one using the oxidation number and some algebra.
