how ionic bonds are held together

Postby 405993422 » Fri Dec 08, 2023 11:05 pm

I understand that ionic bonds are formed via the transferring of electrons and covalent bonds are 2 molecules sharing an electron but how does an ionic vs a covalent bond differ in molecular shape? In an ionic bond does the molecule that lost its electron completely lose the electron and therefore not even stay oriented next to this electron?

In ionic bonds, atoms transfer electrons, forming positively and negately charge ions that are attracted to each other in a lattice structure. In covalent bonds, atoms share electrons, determining the molecular shape based on the arrangement of these shared electrons around the atoms.
