what is the difference between ionic and covalent bonds? how do they relate to each other?

Both of these are different by how they share or transfer of electrons between atoms. Ionic bonds transfer one atom to another while for covalent, atoms share electrons. What makes them relate to one another is polarity and electronegativity. Hope this helps!

Adding on to the previous answer, ionic bonds are indicative of a high electronegativity difference between the two atoms involved. Meanwhile covalent bonds have atoms that are much closer in electronegativity, meaning that they do not pull the electron towards one particular atom as much as the ionic bonds, and instead share the electron. It is important to keep in mind, though, that both ionic and covalent bonds display characteristics of the other type of bond, depending on the magnitude of the difference between the electronegativities. Hope this helps!
