Lewis Structure

Postby Mary Becerra 2D » Sat Oct 28, 2017 8:06 pm

During lecture, Lavelle mentioned that a double bond is shorter than a single bond. Can someone explain why this is?

Also I just realized that I may have posted this in the wrong section, but I would still appreciate an answer. Thank you!

Hi there, multiple bonds (such as a double bond) are shorter than single bonds between the same two elements because the additional bonding electrons attract the nuclei more strongly and pull the atoms closer together. Hope that helps!

Bond length and bond strength are inversely proportional. Therefore, a single bond has a longer bond length but is weaker in terms of bond strength. A triple bond has a shorter bond length, but is stronger in terms of bond strength.
