In this homework problem it asks us to predict which of the following pairs of ions would have the greatest coulombic attraction in a solid compound: a) K+,O-
b) Ga3+, O2- c) Ca2+, O2-
what is a coulombic attraction, and how do you find it in this question?

Coulombic Attraction is the attractive force between any two oppositely charged atoms. To determine which is the strongest, simply multiply the charges on the two atoms to see which is greater. For example, Ga^3+, O^2- would require multiplying 3 x 2 = 6. You can follow these steps with the other two pairs, and the one with the biggest value at the end will be the one with the greatest attraction.

Also, this is not an assigned homework problem so it most likely will not be on the final exam :)
