The ionic radius is the the distance from the nucleus to the outermost electrons in a ion, while the atomic radius is the distance from the nucleus to the normal valence electrons. The ionic radius in a positive ion is less than the distance from the nucleus to the valence electrons and the ionic radius in a negative ion is greater than the distance from the nucleus to the valence electrons.
Basically, losing electrons will reduce the electron orbitals, making the radius smaller and gaining electrons will increase the electron orbitals making the radius larger.

Atomic radius is the size of its atoms, usually the mean and typical distance from the center of the nucleus to the surrounding cloud of electrons. Ionic radius is the radius of an atom's ion. Ionic radii increase down a group and decrease across a period, whereas its the opposite for the atomic radius.
