Electronegativity

Postby Jacob Samuels 1E » Mon May 14, 2018 2:42 pm

When electronegativity > 2, then it’s an ionic bond and when electronegativity < 1.5, then it’s a covalent bond. But what happens when electronegativity is between 1.5 and 2?

I believe that since the 1.5 and 2 parameters are merely rough guidelines with uncertainty, then the region in between just has greater uncertainty

One would have to look at properties other than electronegativity difference to tell what kind of bond is present.

I also believe that you would need to look at more properties other than electronegativity to determine the type of bond.

It kinda just depends on the type of molecules

I learned in highschool that
0.0-0.2 nonpolar covalent
0.3-1.4 polar covalent
>1.5 ionic
but that might be different for this class!
