Do we need to know how to name molecules or determine molecules based on their names for exam 3 or the final?

i believe we just have to know ch 3 (more specifically #5, 9(a,b), 11(a,b), 13, 19(omit part c), 21, 23, 25, 27, 33, 35, 37, 39, 41, 43, 45, 47, 49, 51,53, 55, 57, 59, 61, 63, 65, 67, 69, 71, 73, 75, 77, 79, 81, 83, 85, 87, 93, 95, 97, 99, 101, 103, 117, 119, 121, 123 ) for the test.

I talked to my TA and they said that for those problems with ammonium and stuff that we aren't expected to know it. I would focus more on the actual drawing of the lewis structures and not get caught up in the compounds.

I doubt we'd need to learn all the names but I'd say to get familiar with them cause really it's quite simple with practice

I remember him saying he's not one to emphasize remembering the names of molecules, more understanding the concept of their structures.

For questions like 3.39, I believe both the Professor and TA (mine at least) have said that they do not require us to know chemical formulas based on names, especially since we have not covered this in class. If a question like this were to be on the test, they woud more than likely provide the name along with the chemical formula for what is unknown.

For example, if we were asked to write the Lewis structure for Sodium Hypochlorite, the chemical formula for Hypochlorite, ClO-, would be given, but the entire formula for Sodium Hypochlorite would not because we have learned enough to complete the Lewis structure with only the ClO- formula being given.

Hope this helped!! :)
