Radicals are atoms with unpaired valence electrons and usually have an odd number of electrons.

I think this would depend on the molecule given in a problem...If it had an odd number of electrons (when adding up valence electrons), it would be safe to assume one of the atoms would be considered a radical. This can be seen in HW problem 3.55.
