double and triple bonds?

how would we know when to use a double bond or even a triple bond is there some sort of pattern? or should we just know?

In order to determine whether or not to make it a double or triple you would need to find its formal charge first, and from there try to minimize it through the bonds.

The elements in the 7th column never form double bonds, as a general rule
