Polyatomic Ions

The cations and anions have to be treated separately as they aren't linked by shared pairs (stated in the textbook). So what would they be linked by so that the ions are together? For example, ammonium bicarbonate, what links the three ions together so that they aren't just separate ions floating around?

Also, what are some tips in knowing if we're dealing with ions or molecules? Especially when drawing Lewis structures. Is it just the elements themselves and the general trends?

The atoms within each polyatomic ion are linked by the sharing of electrons (covalent bonds). However the polyatomic ions are linked together due to their (+) and (-) charge, which resulted from the transfer of an electron. Therefore, one polyatomic ion is negative while the other polyatomic ion is positive, resulting in an ionic bond between these 2.

Also, ionic bonds are usually between a metal and a nonmetal while covalent bonds are usually between nonmetals.
