### Ground State

What is the ground state and how do you find it? How would I find the answer to 2A.9: Which M3+ ions (where M is a metal) are predicted to have the following ground-state electron configurations?(a) [Ar]3d^7, (b) [Ar]3d^6, (c) [Kr]4d^4, (d) [Kr]4d^3?

Ground state would be the lowest energy state of the atom. So the electron configuration has to show the lowest energy state.

you find the ground state by looking at the periodic table and seeing where the element falls and what s, p, or d orbitals it already fills. And then to get the 3+ charge you take away three electrons from the ground state.

So would the answer be [Ar]3d6?

It also means configurations follow principles like building-up principle(Aufbau), where the electrons don't jump energy levels.

So when looking for the ground state and given a electron such as s2-, I remove two electrons from the last energy level to get the ground state configuration?
