bound atoms

Postby Divya Pimparkar 1E » Sun Oct 28, 2018 7:20 pm

Why do bound atoms have lower energy than separate atoms?

When atoms bind together, there is a release of energy. Therefore bound atoms have less energy than single atoms. This is also the reason that bound atoms are more stable, because of the lower energy.

Bonded atoms are more stable than unbonded atoms. For example, in the covalent bond of H2, the electrons from the atoms get to be near 2 protons instead of only the one proton it had initially.

They release energy when they are bound!

Additionally, since bound atoms are more stable, certain bonded molecules are found more often in nature than their single-atom element. For example, oxygen is commonly seen as O2 rather than just O.

An atom is more stable when it is bonded to another atom because the two are releasing energy either by transferring (ionic) or sharing (covalent) electrons. This action results in the elections being closer to other protons in the nucleus of the other atom and not as close to each other.

Bound atoms are more stable and have lower energy than separate atoms because forming a chemical bond releases energy.

When atoms are bound together they release energy, so they have less energy than an atom that is not bounded with another atom.
