Bond Length

Can someone help clear up how to find different bond lengths in an atom?

To the best of my understanding

Bond length has to be determined experimentally and can vary depending on which atoms are interacting

In terms of decreasing strength it would be triple bond, double bond, single bond

In terms of decreasing length it would be single bond, double bond, triple bond

In resonance structures, a hybrid bond length is observed. If the resonance is between double bonds and single bonds the value of each bond would actually be somewhere between these two bond lengths

So the shorter the bond,the stronger it also is?

Yes. Multiple bonds are shorter than single bonds. Adding bonding electrons attract nuclei more and pulls the atoms closer.

You do not need to know how to calculate bond lengths unless the covalent radii are given for each atom (then the bond length is the sum of these radii). It is helpful to know that triple bonds are the shortest, then double bonds, then single bonds, and that triple bonds are the strongest, then double bonds, then single bonds.

In addition to the patterns of decreasing bond length from single to double to triple bonds, there is also a pattern in which larger atoms have a larger distance between each other, resulting in a longer bond length.

The length of the bond is determined by the number of bonded electrons (the bond order). The higher the bond order, the stronger the pull between the two atoms and the shorter the bond length. Generally, the length of the bond between two atoms is approximately the sum of the covalent radii of the two atoms
